Georgia Power is expected to seek regulatory approval to increase thecap on the amount of solar power it buys from the private sector. That
increase is likely to spur solar installations at Georgia businesses and homes. Georgia Power buys and sells solar power at a premium through its Green Energy program, which is capped at 2.5MW. The utility hopes to boost the cap to 6.4MW, Lauren Bubba McDonald, chairman of the Georgia Public Service Commission, said Wednesday. Georgia Power was tight-lipped on its plans, late Wednesday. We're looking to help grow solar in Georgia and we're going to have more details about our plans in the next few weeks,a spokeswoman said.
McDonald said regulators will consider Georgia Power's request by year-end. Boosting the cap is an effort to diversify Georgias alternative energy portfolio, McDonald said. About 60 percent of electricity in Georgia is
generated by coal, he noted. Once the new cap is put in place, McDonald said, Georgia will lead 35 states and the District of Columbia in cumulative solar capacity. Expanding the market for solar energy is likely to spur installations of solar panels, since more projects will get the financing, said Peter Marte, CEO of Hannah Solar, a solar project developer. Georgia Power pays 18.3 cents per kilowatt/hour for solar power it buys from the Green Energy programs subscribers and sells the power at $4.50 per 100 kilowatt/hour blocks.
Atlanta homeowners can benefit from these rebates if they install a Solar-Ready Air Conditioning system. One of the best systems is the new Lennox SunSource available from Premier Indoor Comfort . Premier Indoor Comfort is one of the largest air conditioning,
heating and indoor comfort Lennox dealers in Atlanta and all Atlanta zip codes. The SunSource Home Energy System is the easiest way for homeowners to add solar energy to their home in Fulton and Dekalb County. The first step is replace their air conditioner with a solar-ready SunSource airconditioning unit. As time and budget allows Premier Indoor Comfort can add solar modules to the homeowners rooftop. The more solar modules the more energy savings. The solar energy generated by the modules is first used for the air conditioning and indoor comfort systems. Additional energy can be sold to utility companies such as Cobb EMC and Georgia Power.
About Atlanta: Atlanta was founded in 1837 as the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line (it was first named Marthasville in honor of the then-governor's daughter, nicknamed Terminus for its rail location, and
then changed soon after to Atlanta, the feminine of Atlantic as in the railroad). Today the fast-growing city remains a transportation hub, not just for the country but also for the world: Hartsfield Atlanta International
Airport is one of the nation's busiest in daily passenger flights.Direct flights to Europe, South America, and Asia have made metro Atlanta easily accessible to the more than 1,000 international businesses that operate here and the more than 50 countries that have representation in the city through consulates, trade offices, and chambers of commerce. The city has emerged as a banking center and is the world headquarters for 13 Fortune 500 companies.
