About Atlanta: Atlanta was founded in 1837 as the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line (it was first named Marthasville in honor of the then-governor's daughter, nicknamed Terminus for its rail location, and then changed soon after to Atlanta, the feminine of Atlantic -- as in the railroad).  Today the fast-growing city remains a transportation hub, not just for the country but also for the world: Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport is one of the nation's busiest in daily passenger flights.  Direct flights to Europe, South America, and Asia have made metro Atlanta easily accessible to the more than 1,000 international businesses that operate here and the more than 50 countries that have representation in the city through consulates, trade offices, and chambers of commerce.  The city has emerged as a banking center and is the world headquarters for 13 Fortune 500 companies.

COBB EMC Hints To Reduce Utility Bills

Seal air leaks. Caulk around the window and door frames (non-moving parts). Add weatherstripping and door sweeps to doors, or replace weatherstripping as it wears out. Use caulk or expanding spray foam to insulate where plumbing, wiring, and ducting penetrates through walls.

Choose a programmable thermostat. Newer models have “smart” features such as pre-programmed “night” and “vacation” settings that automatically adjust the temperature. But remember a thermostat is just a tool to help you save — you still need to choose energy-efficient settings.

Schedule tune-ups for your heating and air conditioning system. Regular maintenance will help your system run more efficiently.

Install insulated draperies or other energy-saving window coverings. Be sure to close them at night.

Insert a fireplace pillow. In addition to closing the damper, you can buy a plastic, inflatable “pillow” that inserts into the chimney to stop heat from escaping up the chimney when the fireplace is not in use. Contact your local fireplace dealer or search online.

Install high-efficiency showerheads and faucet aerators. New showerheads are required to meet a 2.5 gallon per minute standard; the lower the number, the more you’ll save. For $10-$20, you can replace your showerhead and save water and energy. If you have a pre-1992 showerhead, it could be using 5.5 gallons per minute or more. That adds up to 50+ gallons when you are in the shower for more than 10 minutes! Fix leaky faucets, too.

Use lighting controls. Motion detectors, occupancy sensors, timers and dimmers can all help save on lighting. It’s also a good idea to put a timer switch on your bathroom fan; a fan can waste heated or cooled air if left running longer than necessary. About 10 minutes after your shower or cooking is done is usually sufficient.

Plant trees. It will take several years before you see the benefit, but trees planted on the east, west and south sides of a house provide natural cooling through shade, reducing the need for air conditioning. Deciduous trees will shade in summer and allow more light in winter. Trees can also form windbreaks to protect your home from chilly winter winds.

Atlanta Homeowners Can Improve Air Comfort With Heating And Air Conditioning Maintenance Programs

An air conditioner is a very tough piece of equipment that is engineered to withstand all sorts of abuse and keep on running. This is great news for Atlanta Homeowners but it can lead to complacency about the importance of air conditioner maintenance. Just like our cars, air conditioners perform better and longer when they receive regular maintenance and tune-ups.

HVAC-AtlantaGA by Premier Indoor Comfort recommends their Atlanta customers have their heating and cooling equipment checked and professionally maintained at least once a year.
Without regular maintenance an air conditioner will lose about 5% of its original operating efficiency for each year of operation. For example if you purchased an air conditioning unit (13 SEER) a few years ago and did not have the regular maintenance performed your unit may be functioning like a much less efficient 10 SEER air conditioning unit today! The good news is that you can recover most of that lost efficiency through regular air conditioner maintenance.

Studies have shown that air conditioners that have regular maintenance will maintain up to 95% of its original efficiency. The cost of a maintenance program is recovered very quickly by energy savings on your monthly electric bill and reduced air conditioning repair costs. A properly serviced air conditioner will also do a better job of dehumidifying your home.

HVAC-AtlantaGa by Premier Indoor Comfort offers special prices for air conditioning tune-ups and maintenance throughout Fulton County and Atlanta metro area at this time of the year. They offer an annual service program, ESP, a comprehensive preventative maintenance service that insures that your heating and air conditioning units will be professionally serviced two times a year. Your heating and cooling units will be automatically serviced at the crucial time- the beginning of the cooling and heating seasons. Premier Indoor Comfort trained service technicians will complete a precision tune-up, professionally clean and conduct a thorough safety inspection.

In addition ESP customers receive Priority Status for scheduling service and repair calls and receive a 15% discount on all repairs. The ESP program pays for itself and Premier Indoor offers a 100 percent customer satisfaction guarantee. The ESP program is very affordable starting at only $149.

There are some things in addition to yearly heating and air conditioner tune-ups that you can do to help ensure a high level of comfort and proper system operation. First, buy good filters and change them regularly. Next, keep bushes and other materials away from the outside unit of your air conditioner. Another good idea is to avoid closing supply air outlets in your house. In almost all cases, closing supply outlets is harmful to the operation of the overall system.

Aging Parents And Your Emotional Well-Being In Atlanta

Look for books and check the Web. There is extensive information about how to assist your aging parents. What you’re unlikely to find, however, is help for the multitude of feelings you will experience as your mom or dad ages. Baby boomers frequently cite the roller coaster of emotions they experience as a parent’s health declines. They are unprepared for these intense reactions and need help understanding them. Most of all, they need reassurance that their reactions are normal.

How Will You Feel?

Initial reactions

* Fear. When you first realize that your mom or dad is becoming less functional, you will likely experience fear. If you have thought of your parent as capable and strong, it is frightening to anticipate a role reversal — one where you are now there to care for them.

* Grief. — As your dad ages he will no longer be quite the robust man you once knew. This change will trigger the same grieving process that accompanies other life transitions. Further, you will probably grieve each major change in your dad’s functioning over time. If you think of grieving as a healing process — one that leaves you intact after a loss — it will be much easier to endure.

Ongoing feelings

Three factors influence the quality and intensity of your emotional reaction as your parent continues to age:

* your typical reaction to change and loss
* your relationship with your mom or dad
* your level of direct involvement in your parent’s life

If you react well to change, you are likely to handle the decline of your parent relatively well. If you have a good relationship with your mom, the quality of your feelings will be different than if your shared history has been fraught with indifference, emotional distance or conflict. Your degree of involvement with your father will have a unique impact on your feelings. Here are the specific emotions you are likely to experience as your mom or dad ages:

Sadness. Almost everyone feels a degree of sadness as they watch their previously healthy parent decline.

Anger and frustration. No matter how much you love your mom, it is normal to feel impatient and angry about the changes that aging triggers. If you are personally involved in her care, you may feel particularly frustrated with the way her needs interfere with your life.

Guilt. You also are likely to feel guilty as your parent ages. Your remorse may be in response to the anger and frustration discussed above. You may also feel guilty if you live far away from your dad, or, due to other life demands, are unable to spend sufficient time with him.

Coping With Intense Emotions

* Accept that these reactions are normal. The feelings will be less troublesome if you don’t fight them.

* Control what you can and let go of the rest. You can’t change what your aging mom is experiencing. What you can do is provide help and support.

* Don’t take on more than you can handle. Consider your commitments to your work and to other family members when deciding how much of your dad’s care to take on. Overextending yourself will leave you stressed, and will put a strain on your other relationships. Worst of all, you may end up taking your frustration out on your parent, causing you intense guilt.

In all Atlanta many elderly individuals can take 10 prescription medications a day (sometimes more), which makes it challenging for them to take the right pills at the correct dosages.

It's a major concern for caregivers considering these stats: More than 30 percent of all prescription medication is taken incorrectly, resulting in 125,000 deaths every year. Among the elderly, about 40 percent of hospitalizations are related to taking medication incorrectly. As reported recently on CBS Atlanta.

That's why a dispenser was created. One of them is known by the name of TabSafe.

It alerts the individual, it drops the medication, and then it calls them if they don't take the pills.

The machine dispenses medications based on a schedule that is programmed online by the caregiver.

This offers greater peace of mind for the elderly patient. The individual and family feel like they have better control of their own capabilities. Aging patient's famiy members actually know what's going on when they're not there.

Medicine dispensors like Tabsafe have allowed individuals to move from an assisted living facility to an apartment. Patients that could not keep up with their medicines are now finding they can and are improving their quality of life. Caregivers only have to refill the machine once or twice a month.

It can save money, too.

In he case of the TabSafe machine it costs about $700 and there's a $10 monthly fee for the Web program. It can be programmed form your iphone as well.

Dry And Wet Rot Repairs In Atlanta

How to Check For and Repair Dry and Wet Rot

Check vulnerable areas of timber, for signs of rot. The bottom of sash windows, french doors, back doors, window and door frames are more susceptible to rot where water can collect or the wall/floor is suffering from damp. If the paint finish is damaged, this can increase the risk of wet rot. However, although the paint may look sound, the timber underneath may be rotting from the back.

Push a thin bladed knife into painted timber, the blade should stop after a short distance; if it goes in up to the handle, it is almost certainly a sign of rot behind the paint.

Timber suffering from wet rot will feel spongy (even through a coat of paint) and look darker than the surrounding timber. When dry, the timber will easily crack and crumble into fine particles.

We would always recommend that external timber frames, windows and doors are adequately painted every year or if any cracks start to appear in paint work to protect the timber from frontal ingress of water.

We usually replace all rot with hardwood, we cut away the rot and add a new piece of timber joined to that remaining. If rot has reached the glass in any windows or doors we would recommend replacing. If the damage is confined to a very small area we will cut back to sound timber, treat, woodfill the surface and paint with a primer.

Atlanta VA Benefits Use could be on the Rise in Assisted Living

Veterans are increasingly using their benefits to pay for assisted living. But the number of beneficiaries could be higher, experts say. There are nearly 13 million wartime veterans in the United States who could qualify for nearly $2,000 monthly toward assisted living.

According to VA estimates, 2.3 million veterans who served in World War II are living in the United States, in addition to 2.6 million who served in Korea and 7.7 million in Vietnam.

To qualify, members must have served a minimum of only 90 days and must meet other medical and financial qualifications. As reported in The Wall Street Journal, about 105,000 veterans as well as a large number of widows were using their benefits as of last year.

"This can be really important not only for older Americans, but also for their kids if they're trying to deal with mom and dad and how they're going to pay" for assisted living and other long-term-care services, says Tom Pamperin, an associate deputy undersecretary in the VA's Veterans Benefits Administration.

The benefit is underused, he says, because "it doesn't occur to veterans in their 70s who may have had no encounter with the VA other than qualifying for a home loan 40 years ago that there are benefits payable to them."

Leading senior living companies are enhancing their sales and marketing strategies as well as services to residents by helping seniors navigate and process the benefit paperwork. Hershey-Pennsylvania-based Country Meadows Retirement Communities received an ALFA 2010 Best of the Best Award for its Veterans’ Benefits Program. Through this award program, the Assisted Living Federation of America each year recognizes best practices in senior living.

The Veterans’ Benefit Program is a valuable and much-needed service to residents and their families says Eileen Kutzler with Country Meadows, who personally has helped dozens of residents receive their veterans’ benefits. The process can be onerous, Kutzler says; applications can be up to 23 pages long and take more than eight months of back-and-forth communications with the federal agency.

How Vinyl Siding Repairs Are Done In Atlanta

In the Atlanta market, Vinyl siding resists cracking, peeling and chipping, but after years of installation it may require repairs or replacement. Replacing small portions of vinyl siding can repair damages due to wind, falling trees and limbs or brittleness in extremely low temperatures. Using the correct procedures in replacing one piece of vinyl siding, you can blend it in with the entire wall of the house so that the repair is not noticeable.

Difficulty - Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Zip tool
Pry bar
Nail puller
Measuring tape
Chalk
Tin snips

1. Use a zip tool to pry the edge of the damaged vinyl siding out from its chamber on one end. A zip tool has a rubber handle and bends in a 45-degree angle forward with a small slot on the end. It fits the channels of vinyl siding for easy removal and replacement. Slide the zip tool under the edge of the siding and slide the entire length to release it. Pull the piece out with a pry bar and use a nail puller to pull all of the nails away. Pull the siding upwards and out to remove.

2. Measure the area where the vinyl siding was removed with a measuring tape and add 2 inches to the measurement. Measure the new piece of vinyl siding and mark with chalk. Cut the vinyl siding on chalk lines with tin snips to the correct size.

3. Place the new siding on top of the replacement area with a 1-inch overhang on each end above the original siding. Lock the bottom of the new siding piece into the top of the piece below by inserting it into the slot and pushing down all across the length of the new piece. Slide the zip tool underneath the new siding and slide it down its length to secure the new siding in its chamber.

4. Hammer galvanized nails into the nail slots at the top of the replacement vinyl siding. Secure the top of the siding by inserting the zip tool at one end and sliding across the entire top length of the replacement siding.

Tips and Warnings

a) If you do not have additional vinyl siding for repairs from your original installation, remove the old portion and take to a merchant to match the style, size and color. This will produce a professional repair job that is not apparent so that it blends in with the wall.

b) Do not nail the nails into the wall completely tight. Siding needs some room for expansion due to changing weather conditions.

c) Replace lengths of vinyl siding that span at least three studs so that they fasten with nails on each end and in the middle. This provides better support for your repairs than replacing a small portion.

d) A large flat screwdriver can replace the zip tool in installation and repairs of vinyl siding, though the zip tool works best due to its shape and size.

Facing Large Georgia Power Rate Increases More Atlanta Homeowners Taking a New Look at Solar Power

Georgia Power has announced more than $1 billion in future electric rate increases, which should increase interest in home solar power.

Previously, many Atlanta homeowners that have wanted to harness the free and abundant solar energy to power their homes were discouraged by the upfront costs. In addition, the rates for electricity in Georgia were very affordable compared to other parts of the country. Now with the cost of electricity rising, new solar technology products and available energy rebates- the time has never been better to add solar power to your home. This year Georgia Power has requested an electric rate increase of over $1 Billion dollars. Georgia Power also has announced additional rate increases to pay for two new nuclear plants. The bottom line is if you live in Georgia you will face large increases in the cost of the electricity for your home.

Servicing Atlanta and surrounding areas, Premier provides products and services for homeowners concerned about home energy efficiency. Premier is offering a new solar home energy system, SunSource. Premier Indoor Comfort is one of the largest Lennox Heating and Air Conditioning dealers for Atlanta and provides customers with the products and services they need to decrease their energy bills and reduce their environmental impact. SunSource Home Energy from Lennox is the easiest step toward owning a solar powered home.

There is now a solution for homeowners who felt that adding solar power to their home did not fit within their immediate budget. With the SunSource Home Energy System, all you need to start is to purchase one of the top rated Lennox Solar-Ready Air Conditioning Units. These units are combined with Solar Modules that can be added later when time and budget permits. The more Solar Modules a homeowner adds the more electric power that is generated. Lennox has provided an estimate that homeowners in the Northern Georgia that replace their standard Air Conditioning unit (10 SEER AC) with a SunSource System with the XC-21 Air Conditioner and only six Solar Modules can save up to 202% of their cooling costs.

The Solar Modules are not the over-sized solar panels that may come to mind. Each Solar Module has its own scaled-down microinverter that converts solar energy into usable electric power. You can start with a small number of solar modules and add more later to generate more electric power. The initial power generated by the SunSource Home Energy System is used for your heating and cooling units. When these units are not running the system powers lighting, appliances and other electronics in the home. Perhaps the best news is that any surplus power is returned to your utility company for a credit on your power bill. Georgia Power recently increased the amount of power they would purchase from 1 megawatt to 2.5 megawatts at $.17 per kwh.

SunSource Home Energy System qualifies for tax credits under the Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. Homeowners receive 30% of the cost and installation fee. They also receive up to a $1,500 tax credit for the solar-ready Lennox heat pump or air conditioner that is an integral part of the SunSource system. For more information please call one of the local indoor comfort specialists at Premier Indoor Comfort at (404)-592-5596 or please visit their website www.Atlanta Air Conditioner Repair.com.
