Elder Neglect In Atlanta Georgia
When an elder care facility can provide the round-the-clock care and medical attention our loved ones need, it’s often the best decision. But each year, reports reach the news of facilities where staff members ignore or actively abuse the people they’re supposed to care for. When the standard of care at a facility is so low that you’re concerned about a loved one’s well-being, he or she may be a victim of elder abuse. The National Center on Elder Abuse has reported that one to two million adults over 65 has been abused or neglected in some way by a caregiver -- but only one in six cases is reported.
Types of Atlanta Elder Care Abuse Lawsuits
The same organization reports that the most common type of elder abuse or neglect is physical. That doesn’t just mean hitting, although hitting is certainly considered a type of elder abuse. Physical abuse can also be neglect so severe that there are physical consequences: not giving the victim enough food and water, not turning a sick person to prevent bedsores or allowing an irrational older adult to wander the streets. Others include:
Deliberate over-medication, or negligent errors with medications.
Verbal and emotional abuse, including deliberate social isolation.
Sexual abuse.
Financial exploitation.
Abuse is horrifying no matter who the victim is. But it can be particularly devastating for older people because they may not be able to bounce back as well as they used to from physical injuries, financial setbacks or emotional betrayal. And for families, who sometimes agonize over whether to place a loved one in a facility in the first place, elder abuse can bring guilt as well as horror at the facility’s breach of their trust. Unfortunately, abuse in an assisted living facility can go unreported for months or years, especially when family visits are predictable or rare.
It is worth the time to speak to and Assisted Living Adviser when selecting Assisted Living Care Facilities for your loved one. Often times these services can steer you clear of making the wrong choice. They do this by reviewing in detail your loved ones needs and make sure you understand all the options available to you before entering into an agreement for an assisted living arrangement. One of these firms is Assisted Living Locator Atlanta. You can look to Assisted Living Locator firms that will answer these questions for you. Some of whom are free such as Assisted Living Locators Atlanta. You can contact Assisted Living Locators Atlanta by email info@Assisted Living Atlanta GA or by phone at . The website for Assisted Living Locators is assisteliving-atlantaga.com.
About Atlanta. Atlanta was founded in 1837 as the end of the Western and Atlantic railroad line -- it was first named Marthasville in honor of the then-governor's daughter, nicknamed Terminus for its rail location, and then changed soon after to Atlanta, the feminine of Atlantic -- as in the railroad. Today the fast-growing city remains a transportation hub, not just for the country but also for the world: Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport is one of the nation's busiest in daily passenger flights. Direct flights to Europe, South America, and Asia have made metro Atlanta easily accessible to the more than 1,000 international businesses that operate here and the more than 50 countries that have representation in the city through consulates, trade offices, and chambers of commerce. The city has emerged as a banking center and is the world headquarters for 13 Fortune 500 companies.

Georgia Power Will Buy More Solar Power From Atlanta Homeowners
Atlanta homeowners who use solar power now may be able to sell more solar power to Georgia Power Georgia Power announced that they have received approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) for a new Solar Purchase Tariff that will almost double the amount of solar energy the company purchases from customers to supply its Green Energy Program. The Solar Purchase Tariff will allow Georgia Power to purchase an additional 1.5 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity from customers at 17 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for generating facilities designed to produce less than 100 kilowatts.
Fulton and Dekalb homeowners interested in learning about home solar energy and how they can generate solar power to sell to Georgia Power should contact Hvac-atlantaga by Premier Indoor Comfort. They have introduced a new solar home energy system from Lennox, SunSource Home Energy. This new heating and air conditioning system is solar-ready and can be your first step towards adding solar power to your home. All you need to do is replace your current furnace with the Lennox AC-17 or AC21 units. You can add Solar Modules to your roof at a later time.
How does the SusnSource Home Energy system allow you to sell solar power back to your utility company? The solar power system powers your HVAC system needs first. Next solar energy powers the electrical needs in your house. Any surplus solar energy can then be sold back to your utility comapny in the form of a credit on a future power bill.
For more information about home solar energy please call Atlanta Air Conditioner Repair
at 678-391-9177.
Nearly 4,200 Georgia Power customers have committed to purchase approximately 3.8 million kilowatt-hours of green energy , or enough electricity to power approximately 3,800 homes using 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month.
'Since we began offering customers a 50 percent solar option, we've added almost 1,000 new blocks of the Premium Green Energy product to the program,' said Angela Strickland, director of Energy Efficiency. 'By increasing our solar capacity in the program to 5.4 MW, we hope to keep pace with the significant growth of solar purchases by our customers both now and in the future.'

Assisted Living Assistance In Atlanta
Due to the absence of national standards for assisted living and significant differences among the states, consumers are faced with a situation that can be confusing and that has a high potential for misunderstanding and even fraud. For instance, an individual might need help taking medication. How, and by whom, is it determined whether she is self-directing or needs substantial “medication management”? Who is legally capable of providing that level of help? Who is responsible if there is a problem? What happens if she requires more care as time goes on? Can the facility ask her to leave? Can she appeal that decision? What happens if she runs out of money?
As a result of these and other issues, assisted living advocacy takes many forms. Advocacy can focus on issues ranging from quality of health and personal care to contractual rights to landlord-tenant rights and responsibilities.
Policy Advocacy
Law. States regulate assisted living in very different ways, in part, because they define assisted living differently. Even the names used by states to identify these facilities are different, with common terms including adult homes, enriched housing, senior residences, and congregate housing. An important avenue for advocacy on the state level is working with state leaders to ensure that laws address the state’s unique assisted living situations. It is crucial that laws provide strong protections for consumers, transparency in defining facility and resident rights and responsibilities, and meaningful and effective enforcement mechanisms. For more information, see Robert Mollica’s report for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Residential Care and Assisted Living: State Oversight Practices and State Information Available to Consumers ahrq.gov or the “assisted living state regulatory review” published annually by the National Center for Assisted Living a provider group ncal.org.
Regulation and Oversight. Laws and regulations provide the crucial bases for consumer protections, but they are meaningful only with good oversight and regulatory enforcement. Advocacy can include directly engaging state agency officials who are responsible for oversight informing them of problems and violations, holding them accountable for strong oversight, etc. as well as working to improve regulatory oversight by engaging long-term care ombudsmen and policymakers. Advocates need to support oversight work and make sure that regulatory staff are empowered, both financially and politically, to provide meaningful oversight. The Government Accountability Office’s 2004 report, Examples of State Efforts to Improve Consumer Protections, focuses on state activities and regulatory practices of interest to advocates gao.gov.
Individual Advocacy
Residents’ Rights. Often specified in a state’s law or regulation, residents’ rights in assisted living include freedom from discrimination based on race, gender, religious belief, or sexual orientation; ability to receive and review copies of all written information relating to services offered, costs, etc; ability to live in a safe environment where one’s possessions, physical being, and privacy are protected; and freedom to be informed and to make choices regarding their condition, care, and needs. These and other enumerated resident rights are extremely important. A more extensive listing and discussion can be found on the website of the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform an ALCA member canhr.org.
Autonomy and Independence
Although assisted living is promoted with the promise that people should maintain autonomy and independence for as long as possible, even when they need help with some activities of daily living, very often, assisted living residences overly curtail residents’ freedom. The Long Term Care Community Coalition and Coalition of Institutionalized Aged and Disabled both ALCA members have developed guides for consumers and providers to help them achieve the promise of assisted living www.assisteliving-atlantaga.com.
Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care. At least 50 percent of assisted living residents are believed to have Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Many people choose assisted living as a place that will provide both a good living environment and safety for people with dementia. However, facilities vary greatly in their ability and willingness to care for people with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association has information and resources for people interesting in learning more about what they can do alz.org.
Contractual Rights. An assisted living facility may not include provisions in its contract that exempt the facility from legal responsibility if a resident suffers harm or injury. Such “waiver” provisions are illegal and unenforceable as a matter of public policy. In addition, some assisted living facilities may ask residents to sign a “negotiated risk” agreement, which releases the facility from liability for certain areas of care. Such provisions should not be part of a resident’s contractual agreement with the facility. More information on residents’ contractual rights can be found on the website of the National Senior Citizens Law Center an ALCA member www.nsclc.org.
Tenancy Rights. Tenant rights may be important in assisted living facilities to protect residents from eviction and retaliatory actions. Many states extend landlord-tenant protections provided under state law to assisted living residents. In these states, residents are considered to be tenants of the facility, because they are, in effect, “renting an apartment,” and facilities, therefore, cannot discharge residents without proper notice or legal procedures.
Fraud. Residents of assisted living facilities are protected under standard contract laws when the facility has committed fraud or misled a resident. If the facility arranges for or performs government-paid services – such as Medicaid services – such facilities are also accountable for fraud in the performance of those services for example, if services are billed to Medicaid but not provided to the residents, or if unnecessary Medicaid services are provided. Advocacy activities might focus on supporting Medicaid fraud whistle-blower laws with qui tam provisions which give a financial incentive to individuals who report fraudulent activities, supporting laws and regulatory enforcement to protect residents in assisted living contracts for instance, by requiring facilities to be clear and specific about services provided and associated costs, and by educating residents and their families on these issues and how to be “educated consumers” of assisted living.

Even The White House Is Getting Solar Power
More and more Atlanta homeowners are saving money by powering their heating and cooling systems with solar power. Solar power is abundant, free and is now easy to add to any size home. One of the better known homes in the country, the White House, plans to install solar panels atop the living quarters. The solar panels to be installed in spring 2011 will heat water for the first family and supply a portion of their electricity.
Homeowners in Fulton and Dekalb can follow the lead of our President by converting their home to solar power in one easy step by calling Atlanta Air Conditioner Repair by Premier Indoor Comfort Systems. As one of the largest Lennox Dealers in Metro Atlanta, they are offering the new SunSource Home Energy System. All you need to do to start is replace your current heating system with a solar-ready Lennox AC-17 or Lennox AC-21 units. You can add SunSource Solar Modules at a later date- as time and your budget allows. You can add as many as fifteen solar modules. The more modules the more energy you save. The best news is that the surplus solar power that you do not use can be sold back to your utility company.
If your political leanings tend to be toward the right side of the political spectrum please know that former President George W. Bush both tapped the power of the sun during his tern in the White House. Bush's solar systems powered a maintenance building, some of the mansion, and heated water for the pool.
Based on available roof space, White House administration officials expect the photovoltaic system will include between 25 to 75 panels and will convert sunlight into 19,700 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. That would save a typical household $2,300 on its electricity bill, based on commercial rates in Washington. The solar hot water heating system, based on government estimates, could save an additional $1,000 a year.

Fascia And Soffit Repairs In Atlanta
As an Atlanta homeowner, when you're looking for a top-shelf roofer, take advantage of the time to do some repair work on fascia boards and soffits. It makes sense to take care of this before the new felt, shingles, and flashing go on.
The first thing to do is to walk around the house with a notebook, and do a close visual inspection to see what is needed. For the most part it is likely to be in reasonable shape, there may be a few spots begging for attention.
The Walk-Through--
Take your tape measure with you, in addition to a notebook. When you spot some fascia board or plywood on the bottom side of the soffit that needs replacement, take a measurement and make note of it. Also, make note of the dimensions of the existing wood.
If your fascia boards are 12' long, in most cases it's not necessary to replace the whole length. The only thing to remember is that the break should be on the center of a rafter end, for nailing purposes.
On my house, the fascia board is 1" X 6" and the plywood is 3/8". That's rather standard in my neck of the woods, but it might vary depending on where you live. Another thing to make note of is how many soffit vents you need to buy.
Soffit vents are those rectangular vents on the underside of the soffit. They're usually made of galvanized metal, and covered with a nylon mesh or netting to prevent bees and such from taking up residence in your attic. Note that Hardiplank soffit material has the vent built in. This is a great option on new construction.
When you go to the home improvement store for materials, remember to get a little extra to allow for bits that are just too small to use. There's always some scrap.
Replacing Fascia Board--
When you get ready to replace fascia board, you'll have a choice of what material you want to go with. Hardiplank is a good choice since it's guaranteed not to rot, delaminate, or warp. This is because it's a fiber-cement material. Because of this, you can go a lot longer between paint jobs; expansion and contraction is minimized.
Before removing the old fascia board, carefully prop up the shingles. Next, remove the flashing. Now, cut out the bad sections of board, set the circular saw blade to a 45-degree angle, and set the depth to just cut through the board -- but not so deep as to cut into the rafter more than 1/16".
At this point, I replaced any under-soffit plywood that I needed to. It made more sense to cut the holes for the soffit vents before nailing it up, so I did that.
Then cut the new fascia boards and nail them up. Use an airless finish-nail gun to do this to save time, but a hammer and nail-set would have been almost as easy.
Finishing the Job--
Don't be in too much of a hurry to get the flashing back on. The first thing to do at this point is to putty all the nail holes and caulk all the joints. (Always be careful when you buy caulking. For this job, it must be labeled "paintable.") The joints where the fascia boards mitered together. Also, where the soffit plywood met the house, other plywood, and the fascia board.
Next, prime and paint the face of the fascia boards, which free you to replace the flashing and let the shingles back down. Knowing that your work is now protected from any impending rain, tackle the job of priming and painting everything else.
The final part of the project, which I'm still working on, was to add extra soffit vents. This was recommended by my roofer, because the new ridge vents had a higher air flow capacity than my previous system. How many CFM's? I haven't a clue.
Everything is detail and it's all "cut-up." Don't attempt it without a stack of CDs.
