How You Know The Rock In Your Atlanta Home is Granite
Over the last decade granite rock has become so common in homes and that anyone these days can name it when they see it. What most people call granite, geologists are likely to call "granitoid" until they can get it into the lab. Here's a simplified explanation.
Granitoid meets two criteria: (1) it is a plutonic rock that (2) has between 20 percent and 60 percent quartz.
- Plutonic rocks cooled at depth very slowly from a hot, fluid state. A sure sign is well-developed, visible grains of various minerals mixed in a random pattern. They look clean, and they don't have strong layers or strings of minerals like those in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
- As for quartz, a rock with only a little quartz is something else, and a rock with more than 60 percent quartz is officially called quartz-rich granitoid (a remarkably simple answer).
Geologists assess both of these criteria with inspection.
OK, we have abundant quartz. Next comes the feldspar, which is always present in plutonic rocks whenever there's quartz. That's because quartz (pure silica) only forms when there's too much silicon oxide to be packed into feldspar. Feldspar is the next-highest mineral in silica content, but it also includes aluminum, calcium, sodium and potassium.
When enough of these other elements run out, quartz starts to form.
There are two types of feldspar: alkali feldspar and plagioclase.
The balance of the two is the key to sorting out the granitoids into five named classes. The names derive from rocks made of feldspar but without quartz:
- Alkali feldspar
- Syenite
- Monzonite
- Monzodiorite
- Diorite
True granite corresponds to the first three classes, plus at least 20 percent quartz. Petrologists call the three alkali feldspar granite, syenogranite and monzogranite, but they also call them all "granite."
Granites also have dark minerals, sometimes quite a lot and sometimes hardly any. Usually feldspar-plus-quartz dominates, and geologists call granitoids felsic rocks in recognition of this. A true granite can be rather dark, but if you ignore the dark minerals and assess only the felsic component, it can still be properly classified.
Light-colored granites can be nearly pure feldspar-plus-quartz—that is, they may be very highly felsic. That qualifies them for the prefix "leuco," meaning light-colored. Leucogranites may also be given the special name aplite, and leuco alkali feldspar granite is called alaskite. Leuco granodiorite and leuco tonalite are called plagiogranite (making them honorary granites).
Dark minerals in granitoids are rich in magnesium and iron. These are called the mafic ("MAY-fic") component. An especially mafic granitoid may have the prefix "mela," meaning dark-colored.
The most common dark minerals in granitoids are hornblende and biotite.
Still more mafic a mineral is olivine. Normally olivine and quartz never appear together, but in exceptionally sodium-rich granite the iron-bearing variety of olivine, fayalite, is compatible. The granite of Pikes Peak in Colorado is an example of such a granite.
A granite can never be too light, but it can be too dark. What stone dealers call "black granite" is not a granite at all, because it has little or no quartz in it. It's not even a granitoid (although it is a true commercial granite). It's usually gabbro, but that's a subject for another day.

Staggering Array of Flooring Choices in Atlanta
I was looking the other day and was staggered by the array of flooring choices homeowners face. I suggest that you make a careful study to get the most for your money.
Each type of flooring has pros and cons.
When examining laminate wood flooring, price is a good indicator of the quality of the material. Higher quality laminate flooring can last upwards of 20 years, whereas lower-quality laminate floors will often need to be replaced sooner.
The biggest drawback to laminate is its appearance. Despite manufacturers working hard to create better quality laminate, it does not look the same as real wood flooring.
Regardless of the grade of laminate you put in, people will say, 'You have laminate'. No matter how good a laminate is, it's still a laminate.
Real wood floors have a "distinct" appearance which cannot be easily duplicated. Perhaps the first eco friendly flooring choices which spring to mind are real wool carpets and wood. Real wool carpets are certainly much more environmentally friendly than synthetic alternatives as they don’t require the use of oil-based products and, if they have a natural jute backing, are biodegradable. Wood can also be a great eco friendly flooring choice, but make sure that it is from a sustainable source or is made from reclaimed wood.
In addition to these eco friendly flooring options, there are also many others. Natural linoleum is made from linseed oil and pine resin and is a fantastic, durable surface suitable for most rooms including kitchens and bathrooms. Tiles are also a great earth friendly flooring choice, and you can choose from a number of recycled materials including ceramic, metal and glass. Natural stone also makes a very hard wearing surface especially for rooms such as kitchens.
Two further choices which you may not have thought of are cork and bamboo. Cork is highly durable but also softer underfoot than many other ‘hard’ flooring types. Bamboo is also an excellent alternative to wood although it is not ideal for damp rooms such as bathrooms and the transportation of the material should also be considered with regards to its eco friendliness.

How I Repair Squeaky Floors In Atlanta
No matter how durable a floor material is meant to be, I find repeated wear and tear from daily traffic will eventually show and you may find yourself in need of some floor repair work – whether it is squeaky stains on carpets, scratched surfaces, cracks in tiles or floorboards . Sometimes entire sections are damaged and will need to be refinished or replaced. Most suppliers and manufacturers will advise on repair as well but some repairs are actually simpler than you think and can be attempted by yourself before having to call in the professionals. Here are two common problems that can be easily tackled at home:
Squeaky Floors
This is one of the most common problems I come across and although often not serious, can become irritating on a daily basis. In some cases, it is as simple as sprinkling some talcum powder over the noisy area and sweeping it into the cracks between the boards. For more serious squeaks, you will need to get into the space beneath the floor or the basement and ask someone to walk directly above you to help locate the problem. Once you have pinpointed the area then use a piece of chalk to outline the area. Now look at the joists within this area: anywhere there is a gap between the joists and the subfloor, the floorboards can move which means that they will squeak. Fix this by installing shingles or wood shims into the gaps, this will reduce movement.
However, if the squeaks seem to be originating from the area between the joists, then your problem is a gap between the floorboards themselves and the subfloor. Fix this by pulling the two layers together using wood screws: drill holes through the subfloor and into the squeaky area (this prevents wood cracking) and make sure that your wood screws are long enough to penetrate to the floorboards but at the same time, not so long that they will poke out above the floorboards.
If you cannot gain access to the space below your floorboards then you will need to do repairs from above, using spiral flooring nails. Again, I follow the same procedure for localizing the area of squeaking and determining whether it is from the joists or between them. Then, use two spiral flooring nails angled towards each other in a V-shape and drive them through the floorboards down to the subfloor. If the squeaks are from the joists, make sure the nails drive into the joist as well. Again, drill holes first to prevent the wood splitting.
In some cases, you will have carpeting or even tiling above the floorboards while also not having access from below. This means that access above and below the floorboards is both denied and you will need to remove the floor covering first to get to the floorboards. However, before you do this, try pounding the floorboards with a hammer in the squeaky area – this may provide enough pressure to force nails back and reset any loose floor boards without resorting to major excavations!

My Favorite Granite Edge Types
In Atlanta you will find numerous types of granite edges and many different varieties within those edge types that are available. Though the many options available can make choosing your granite edge tedious, taking the time to pick the right style for your home is worthwhile. Edging is a small part of a room, but the right style accents both the room and your granite. Visiting a showroom in Atlanta or looking at pictures of different granite edge styles will aide your decision process because the edging can look different in reality than in theory.
The following are some of my favorite Edge Types:
Eased
Eased edging is the most basic adging you will find in Atlanta, and generally the cheapest, granite edging style. This edging is primarily vertical on the side with just a little rounding at both corners. The roundings on this granite edge type are very slight, usually only 1/8 inch. The granite edge style is fitting where you do not want flashy edging and allows the granite itself to appear as the center of attention.
Bullnose
Multiple bullnose edge types are available and very popular with families in Atlanta. Each features a curve at some part of the edge. The radii of the curve is between 5/8 and 1¼ inches. A full bullnose is an edge type in which the edge is completely rounded. As a result, the full bullnose is especially good for households with young children because it makes the edges safer if they are bumped. A half bullnose is where the top half of the edge is rounded and the bottom half mirrors an eased edge. A demi bullnose is an edge where just a small portion of the edge is rounded. The fraction of the edge that is rounded differs depending on the granite's thickness so there is not a specific fraction for each bullnose edge.
Bevel
Many households that are looking for a statement in Atlanta choose a bevel edge is perfect for homes with angular features or modern furniture because this granite edge features an angle instead of a rectangular or rounded edge. You can have many degrees of beveling done on your granite edge. The ¼ and ½ inch bevels are common. A double bevel is also available, which means that both the bottom and top edges are angled.
Ogee

The Thing I Like Most About Natural Stone
The thing I like most about Natural Stone is that it is most often a beautiful and durable material and one that will benefit from care in its use, and good housekeeping. There are a number of things I like to consider when choosing Granite for my Home or Office.
As for use there are a number of things I will not do: I do not Drag heavy appliances across the counters or use knives/cleavers directly on the granite surface. These practices leave significant scratches and are extremely difficult to deal with. I do not use any cleaning solution which is abrasive, acidic or highly caustic: dulling (or worse) of the finish may result. I don't Leave liquid spillages sitting on the surface for long periods; fruit juices, oils and detergents can have a detrimental effect on the counter sealer if left in contact for a long time. I never use stone counters as a workbench or stand on them for access (to replace lights for example); it is dangerous for you and bad for the granite. I don't leave hot or greasy pans sitting on the surface.
When caring for my stone surfaces there are a number of practices I must do: I wipe up spills immediately with a clean cloth. I always dry up water splashes; I never leave water spills to dry naturally (for example, around taps). This over time could lead to unsightly lime scale deposits especially in hard-water areas. I always use a chopping board to prevent damage to the worktops (it is also kinder to your knives). Use a trivet (pan stand) to support hot pans. After use, wipe down the surfaces with a clean damp cloth, a little soap in the wiping water may be desirable but frequent washing with copious amounts of water is not recommended.
As a course of action for maintenance I follow good housekeeping practices. There should be no need for major maintenance works; however, to retain the shine on polished surfaces and assist the water-repellent characteristics, the occasional application of a combined cleaner, sealer or polish will be beneficial. Granite is extremely tough but not infinitely so; hence a little care as outlined above will help to maintain its beauty. As with all natural materials, some of the aesthetic appeal comes from the variations of color, veins and markings within any particular type of granite and any slight imperfections are normal and give each piece its individuality.
